The Nisei Veterans Legacy, the Japan-America Society of Hawaii, Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘i, Hawaii Hochi and Hawaii Tourism Japan hope that your walk through this exhibit deepened your knowledge of the journey of the Hawaii Nikkei.
Japanese Americans have a special role to play in the relationship between the U.S. and Japan. With feet planted in both countries, we the Hawaii Nikkei hope to deepen the bond between Hawaii and Japan for our future generations.

“私たちは、移民としてやってきました。
We came as imin, immigrants.
私たちは、この地で生まれ、
カマアイナ（ハワイ語でその土地の人）になりました。
We have become kamaaina, born of the land.
私たちは、日本や日本以外の多くの人々、グループ、
リーダーに導かれました。
We have been guided by many Japanese
and non-Japanese individuals, groups,
leaders and people.
私たちは、そのすべてに感謝しています。
We are thankful to all.
私たちは、ハワイの一部でいられることに感謝
しています。
We are thankful for being part of Hawaii.”

Acknowledgements
Bishop Ryokan Ara, a long-time resident of Hawaii, has committed his life to improve the relationship between Hawaii and Japan. He has published a series of books titled, “Japanese Eyes, American Heart,” describing the life of the Japanese Americans in Hawaii. Originally from Fukushima Prefecture, he was honored as a “Living Treasure of Hawai‘i” by the Honpa Hongwanji in 2017. He was a driving force behind the completion of this exhibit.
