Nisei Military Unit History

Languages

The core Legacy of the Nisei veterans of World War II was created by awe inspiring deeds of valor in their combat missions, history changing results in their intelligence missions, steadfast loyalty to America, and unwavering commitment to defeating the fascist powers that threatened our democracy and freedoms. They accomplished this in five short years, 1940-1945, in their youngest adult hours, days, weeks, and months.

This section of the NVL website describes and explains the military unit framework within which these young Nisei created the Legacy that we, today’s beneficiaries, have the mission to protect and perpetuate. As depicted on this page, these military units were the 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team, Military Intelligence Service, and 1399th Engineer Construction Battalion. The units from which many of the soldiers came are also included. Follow the “Learn More” links to understand the history of these units, and the context of an individual soldier’s story.

To correctly understand this diagram it is very important to read the legend that explains the meanings of the lines that connect between the units in the diagram.
