2022 Nisei Soldiers Memorial Service

Created by the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum to honor the 11 Medal of Honor awardees of Japanese ancestry who served during WWII and are interred at Punchbowl Cemetery. Narration by Lynn Heirakuji, President, NVL.

The NVL hosted the 17th Annual Nisei Soldiers Memorial Service on Sunday, September 25, 2022 at Punchbowl Cemetery. The theme of the service was A Legacy for All Generations. Keynote Speaker Brendan Burns, the grandson of the late Governor John A. Burns, talked about his grandfather’s close affiliation with the nisei community and the heroic service of the nisei soldiers. Also featured in the program were three high school students — Shane Kaneshiro, McKinley High School; Kensington Ono, Punahou School; and Marisa Fujimoto, Kalani High School — who shared their personal insights about the nisei soldiers they had gotten to know as part of a youth journalism program.
