Hawaii Nisei Veterans Exhibit Opens

Honolulu, Hawaii. The NVLC’s permanent exhibit titled, “Hawaii Nisei Veterans,” opened at the Honolulu International Airport today. The dedication ceremony was attended by veterans, dignitaries, family and friends. Among the veterans present were Kenji Ego and Robert Kishnami of the 442nd RCT and former governor Ariyoshi and Herbert Yanamura of the MIS. NVLC’s President Deguchi stated, “this exhibit is part of our ongoing commitment to promote the incredible story of the veterans.” It highlights the legacy of all four Nisei units. A comprehensive timeline of dates and images tells the complete story; beginning with the Issei’s immigration to Hawaii, to the Nisei’s wartime accomplishments and their influence on present day Hawaii.

Attending the ceremony and offering acknowledgment speeches were Senator Hirono, Congresswoman Gabbard and State Senator Kouchi. Kahu Wendall Davis provided the blessing.

Funding for the project was provided by grants from the 2015 Hawaii State Legislature and 442nd RCT Foundation. The airport exhibit planning committee was chaired by Reid Mizue. Members included: Mark and Debbie Oshiro, Jon Ishihara, Mark Matsunaga, Gregg Hirata, Harlan Yuhara, Juanita Allen, Bill Wright, Jonathan Ego and Ron Takamoto. Kurt Osaki of the Osaki Creative Group was responsible for the design of the exhibit. The contractor, Jay Kadowaki Inc., built the display case and installed the exhibit.

The exhibit is located and can be viewed in the Interisland Terminal, adjacent to the Hawaiian Airlines Lounge.
