Kaiser High School Honors the Nisei Veterans

In conjunction with Jayna Omaye of the Honolulu Magazine and the NVL, Kaiser High School students held a special history program to honor Hawaii’s Nisei Veterans on March 3, 2020. The event was coordinated by Teacher Lory Dillon and conducted entirely by students including JROTC cadets. Lynn Heirakuji opened the event by providing an overview of the Army units in which the Nisei Soldiers served during WWII. Veterans Shinye Gima, MIS, and Kenji Ego, 442nd RCT, spoke passionately about their experiences in the war and after the war, and fielded several insightful questions from the students. Notably, the 200 students who attended the event were not required to do so, but came voluntarily because they had an interest in learning about the Nisei Soldiers of WWII.
