The Nisei Veterans Memorial Center (NVMC) in Maui announced its “An Afternoon with the Author” series. The series will be conducted monthly via ZOOM teleconferencing starting July 18, 2020, at 1:30 pm, with award-winning author Julie Checkoway who wrote, “The Three Year Swim Club.” (https://juliecheckoway.com/book/)

The NVMC series will invite published fiction and non-fiction writers from around Hawaii and the mainland to talk about their work, the story behind the story, and their personal journey on the way to having their work published. Ms. Checkoway’s book was selected because of its tie to the Japanese American experience in Maui — it tells the story of Coach Soichi Sakamoto and the kids he trained to swim in the ditches of the Maui Sugar Plantation.
